#oscarssowhite

Every year, a bunch of beautiful famous people come together and celebrate filmmaking and being beautiful and famous. The Academy Awards. The event we all love to hate. For 88 years in a row, we’ve sat on our couches with tubs of ice cream as men and women in glamorous designer clothing accept awards for being exceptional at their job, and convince ourselves that “I could totally do that if I wanted to”. This year, for the second year in a row, all of the major nominees were white. Host Chris Rock wasted no time in pointing that out: “[We’re] here at…

how to be safe in these violent streets

I saw this video the other day. All women should definitely get this product! It’s revolutionary! You never again have to be afraid of another person’s intent to hurt you, and can go to bars, exercise, and travel with confidence! Also, make sure you take an older woman with you everywhere as a chaperone. And never spend time alone with a man. Oh, and your father owns your body until you’re married, when the ownership transfers to your husband. If people are going to start selling chastity belts again, let’s just go all the way back to the 15th century. Assault is a…

jericho

While performing ad analyses in our marketing class, we’ve been talking about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This guy, Maslow, reduced the entire human experience to the pursuit of physiological comfort, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. I reached the “love/belonging” stage when I joined INDEV. This program, at this university, is where I found my people. I’m bad at being away from my family, but I’m lucky to have found a new one at UW. Over the last few years we’ve been building our little world here, and our little world is safe and happy. Last August, shockingly, suddenly, our…

made in canada

I just finished reading a very long post on facebook (x) about supporting the Canadian economy by consciously buying products made in Canada. The author of this post is afraid of North American brands outsourcing their production to (often) developing countries. She leaves us with a call to action: “Stop buying from overseas countries!” The author of this post has a very noble idea to stop globalization. A non-development student might not be as tired of globalization as a development student definitely is. No other topic fills our hearts with such dread as the interaction and integration of companies and increase of international trade…

uncertainty

Here are some things you might not know about me: I’m incredibly emotional. I think that’s why I’m so cut out for indev. I have a big heart, and there’s room for pretty much everyone and everything in it. I get really overwhelmed when I feel that I’ve lost control of a situation. Like, really overwhelmed. I spend every day battling between my emotional need to see everyone happy and my mental need to control every detail of a situation. When I do lose control, I tend to just shut down. I know how to think on my feet and be…

“i didn’t even know he was sick”

If you’ve been on the Internet at all this week, you’ll have heard the sad news that David Bowie and Alan Rickman have passed away. Although I’m not very familiar with their work, I have been reading a lot of Facebook posts and tweets and news stories about them and their time on the planet. One article I read (forwarded to me by my mom) started with the line “I didn’t even know he was sick”. Neither Mr. Bowie nor Mr. Rickman told anyone they had cancer. That’s fair, it’s a personal thing to go through. But for some reason, people are surprised that…
